The 2017 edition of the journal takes a closer look at microinsurance solutions for climate change, focusing on pioneering ideas in the way microinsurance is being designed and offered, and highlighting key lessons learned from a range of different programs and initiatives. 

Articles include insights on designing natural hazard microinsurance products, mobile-based applications, the role of insurance in assisting agriculture value chain players in adapting to climate change, an integrated agricultural and health insurance approach, facilitating private sector responses to climate risk in the developing world, risk reduction, as well as regulatory and supervisory challenges of index-based insurance.

5.     Scaling up Index Insurance for Smallholder Farmers: Recent Evidence and Insight”(2015). By CGIAR.

 

A report by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) exploring evidence from five case studies: 
1. India’s national index-based insurance schemes
2. ACRE – East Africa
3. R4 Rural Resilience Initiative – Ethiopia and Senegal
4. Mongolia Index-Based Livestock Insurance IBLIP
5. Index-Based Livestock Insurance IBLI – Kenia and Ethiopia

 

The report identifies 5 common features appearing to having contributed to recent progress within these initiatives:

 

ü  Explicitly targeting obstacles to improving farmer income;

ü  Integration of insurance with other development interventions;

ü  Giving farmers a voice in the design of products;

ü  Investing in local capacity; and

ü  Investing in science-based index development.
